Formal commendation from the Met Commander SO15 Dominic Murphy QPM at the US Embassy in London, awarded to Dr Richard Rhodes for ‘exceptional expertise, professionalism and dedication during Operation Comparatist, a complex and protracted investigation leading to the conviction of terrorists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) for hostage-taking, torture and murder in Syria in 2014/15. In 2022 the case went to trial in Alexandria, Virginia. Dr Richard Rhodes attended court and presented his evidence. His solidly presented and well supported evidence convinced the judge that the evidence was admissible in court – a major landmark in the use of forensic speaker comparison evidence in the US.

Testimonials

“Dr Earnshaw clearly knows her area of business and came across as a creditable expert witness. She spoke with clarity, explained the work she conducted and how she came to those conclusions in a way the jury could understand, despite the defences best efforts.”

“I just wanted to pass on my thanks and appreciation for the work completed by the FVC. Not only the quality of your work and processes, also the presentation of the product itself, through to Katherine’s court skills. I would also like to acknowledge your approachability as a team and your adaptability in the requests we made to you. I have already had other officers, both within Leicestershire and regionally asking for your details.  This demonstrates how highly FVC have been spoken about within the department and I am sure that when the opportunity arises again we will be looking to utilise your skills.”

DC Masters, Leicestershire Police

“Once the relevant material was with the provider the turn around time was much sooner than I expected. Really good communication from Bryony and a much simpler process than I had anticipated.”

Lee Coulson, NWROCU

“An initial telephone call was made to Bryony Nuttall at The Forensic Voice Centre – this was extremely helpful and very constructive around the type of service the company offered and how they may be able to help with a particular request in a murder enquiry. Bryony was very helpful and outlined exactly what was required for submission and a follow up e-mail confirmed the initial conversation and outlined the next steps. At all times, Bryony provided a current case status and indicated any limitations / expectations about the ongoing work. E-mails between the client and customer were always well written so that it was known how the case was progressing. In the end, a statement was written for the work conducted but it was only ‘screened’ and not actually audio enhanced due to the nature of the recording itself. Thank you very much indeed for being up front at the start about the recording and clearly stating that enhancement was very unlikely to improve the clarity of the speech. Thank you for taking the time to screen the recording and provide the updates for this case – it is most appreciated.”

“The staff at the Forensic Voice Centre were very knowledgeable and communicative at all stages of the audio transcription and questioned utterance analysis process. We were particularly impressed by their Information Management and Bias Mitigation Procedure, and how strictly this was adhered to by the various staff members and directors involved in our case. At court, Dr Katherine Earnshaw was a credible and reliable witness, and she gave an excellent oral account of her report. The team at the Forensic Voice Centre were a pleasure to work with.”

“I have sat through many complex conspiracy trials as Officer in the case and seen expert evidence provided in a number of fields. The evidence provided by Dr Katherine Earnshaw was some of the most impressive I have seen.

She explained evidence that is clearly very complex and made it very understandable for a jury. The expertise and professionalism she provided was clear to all in the court. This was commented on throughout the trial including in the judges summing up. This no doubt had a big influence in convicting one of the defendants in this trial for which the evidence was not as strong.

This is the first time that I have used speaker comparison and was impressed with the service. The turnaround times were clear from the early stages and the evidence was provided before these dates. This is definitely an avenue I will continue to use in future investigations.”
